Unknown Succulent Found and Potted

[Update 8/29/16: It’s a Sedum dendroideum subsp. praealtum]

I found this succulent under our Bosc Pear Tree when I was doing some garden clean up and thought I would pot it up.

Unknown Succulent

These have been growing along one of our fence and my Mom seems to think that may have popped up from our neighbor’s yard.

Unknown Succulent

We never really took much notice or it, but when I saw this good sized multi-branch which was already partially rooted, I thought it would look much better properly potted up and given more light.

Unknown Succulent

I’m not really sure what it is. My Mom thinks it’s a Jade (Cassula sp.) while I think it may be a type of Aeonium… We don’t know.

Anyone know what it is?

This morning, I got had the pleasure of previewing a new quilt store that will open on Thursday, September 1, 2016.

Bay Quilts

Sally Davey, the owner, invited members of the East Bay Modern Quilters (EBMQ) to come in and preview the store and give her suggestion from a customer’s point-of-view. She showed us around and let us walk around to view at all the fabrics and supplies that will be on sale.

Cutting Table

I loved the natural lighting in the store and kept staring up at the loft with the long-arm and space where future classes and workshops would take place. Sally explained how she imagine the classes being set up and asked us what we would like in a class space. Someone even asked if we can hold quilt club meetings or sew-ins there and she was totally open to it! I guess we’ll have something to talk about at our next EBMQ meeting.

Future Class/Workshop Area

There were also quilts for sale on one wall…

Quilt

…and on the opposite side of the store, a whole walls displaying quilts by the late Deanna Davis, who was the president of East Bay Heritage Quilters when I started quilting. It was so nice to see quilts by Deanna that I haven’t seen before.

I can’t wait til it opens and looking forward to taking classes or attending meetings or sew-ins here.

I got a sneak preview to a new quilt shop opening on Sept 1. Sally, the owner, invited the EBMQ to preview and give her suggestions from a customer perspective. I can't wait until it open. #quiltshop #bayquilts #richmond #fabric #quilt #quilting

Broccoli, Mustard and Elephant Garlic Planted

After dinner, I watched a bunch of YouTube videos about how to grow Dragonfruits, I have 3 existing varieties, two recently grown from cutting that I acquired and a bunch that I grew from seeds year ago. I’m. Now contemplating where in our garden I can plant the Dragonfruits so they don’t stay small in their pots.

Afterwards, I did some late night planting in the back yard before I got freaked out by mysterious noises.

Broccoli and Mustard Sown

I planted some Calabrese Broccoli and Yanagawa Tanaka Mustard seeds into 3 inch pots which I will divided later (my new preferred method of growing seeds).

Elephant Garlic

I also broke apart an Elephant Garlic that I bought from the grocery and planted the 9 bulblets into 3 inch pots.

Elephant Garlic Broken Up

I’ll plant these out into the garden when they start sprouting a bit.

Gardening on the Last Weekend in August

Saturday, I cleaned up the square where I previously planted the four Fun Jen Bok Choy that was attacked by some digging critter.

Four Red Winter Kale Planted

In its place, I planted four Red Winter Kale plants and placed wire edging around it to try to deter whatever critter did the digging last time.

Bok Choy 'Fun Jen' Potted Up

I then decided not to plant some of the other Fen Jen Bok Choy in the square foot garden bed and planted four in a large Daiso pot.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Tricolor' Potted

The Tricolor Hydrangea that I recently purchased looked like it need to be potted up, so I did that, placing it in a 3-4 gallon pot. I also moved it over to a more shaded area.

My Aunt and Cousins came over and I gave them some Red Giant Mustard and a cutting from both my Santa Barbara Red Dragonfruit and the Dragonfruit that I grew many years ago.

Dragonfruit Progress

Now that I see my old Dragonfruit plant getting bigger and bigger, I really need to figure out where to plant them. I initially thought of planting it by a pole in the front yard, but I noticed the Santa Barbara Dragonfruit in that area gets too much sun and is getting bleached out, so I need to fine a more shaded location.

Unknown Succulent

As I was cleaning an area under our Bosc Pear tree, I noticed a multi-stem succulent that was growing there, it started rooting but was still able to pull it up. I thought it would look nice if it were properly planted into a pot and given more light. So I planted it into a 3 gallon pot. I didn’t know what it was, so I posted a query with a photo of it to Flickr and Instagram and some responded that it was a Sedum praealtum.

I noticed that the Bromeliads that I purchased back in June (2016) are doing well.

Neoregelia 'Lucky ???'

The Aechmea recurvata of them actually has two pups now.

Aechmea recurvata

I moved the Echeveria ‘Chroma’ from the front yard where I thought I may get attached by slugs and snails to the back to join all my other succulents.

Echeveria 'Chroma' Blooming

I took six cuttings from a broken Iresine branch and also potted up a little Spearmint cutting.

20160828_195116

It was already dark Sunday evening and I ended my gardening by potting up a Masdevallia barlaeana ‘Harold’ that was still in a 2-inch pot into a hanging Orchid basket.

I found this insect near our Rose bush (here in the Northern San Francisco Bay Area) while gardening… It’s the first time I’ve ever seen this kind of bug and I have no clue what it is

Can anyone identify it?

Two Evening of Gardening

After spending Saturday day and Sunday morning at Hayward, I got home and immediately changed to work in the garden. I was planning on cutting the Fire Blight off our Pear tree, but did not get around to it.

I started my placing paver bricks around our Compost Bin because something has been digging into it. I think the larger hard flat area will also be easier for my Mom to walk on.

I then potted up the mixed Zinnia seedling that were growing in cell packs. I potted up ten 3 inch pots. Next up was potting up two 1 gallon pots of Gerber Daisies that my brother gave my Mom for Mother’s Day. Each of those went into a ceramic pot.

Potted up Gerber Daisy

My next chore was to cut down the bolted Portuguese Kale in the backyard Square Foot Garden so I can amend the soil and plant some veggies for the summer. I’ll save some seeds from the 8+ foot Portuguese Kale plant and compost the rest. I didn’t finish clearing everything out since it was dark now and I was getting hungry.

Monday after work, it was still some daylight left so I rushed to get some gardening done. I finished cutting down and pulling the old Portuguese Kale and amended three squares with Chicken Manure so I can plant out Cucumber start, which I finished off by mulching with with aged straw. I didn’t get to amend the other cleared square, but I’ll do that later.

Planted Burpless Hybrid Cucumbers

Before going in, I potted up some Strawberry Popcorn from cell packs to 3″ pots.

Strawberry Popcorn

I also potted up a few Purple Potatoes that I found in the Square Foot Garden.
